🧪 A powder-format enzymatic exfoliating mask from CIRCADIA built for the clients most other exfoliants can't touch — sensitive, rosacea-prone, and acneic skin types that react to acids and physical scrubs.

Where single-enzyme masks rely on one mechanism, the Cocoa Enzyme Mask deploys three proteolytic enzymes — Bromelain, Papain, and Trypsin — each targeting distinct surface protein structures. The result is more thorough cell turnover without pH disruption or friction. Trypsin's specific action on keratin buildup makes it especially useful as a pre-extractions step in acneic protocols, loosening follicular congestion before manual clearance. Theobroma Cacao Seed Powder contributes polyphenolic antioxidants and mild vasoconstricting properties that help visibly calm redness — a meaningful differentiator for sensitized clients. Because it's free of AHAs, BHAs, and abrasives, it also slots cleanly into corrective facial protocols as a prep step that improves subsequent serum absorption.

A reliable monthly exfoliation option for the reactive-skin clients your current lineup can't serve.

Benefits

  • Triple-Enzyme Exfoliation: Three proteolytic enzymes — Bromelain, Papain, and Trypsin — each dissolve different surface protein structures, working together to gently loosen and remove dead skin cells. This multi-pathway approach delivers more thorough surface exfoliation than single-enzyme formulas, leaving skin visibly smoother and better prepared to receive subsequent treatment products.
  • Suitable for Sensitive, Reactive, and Rosacea-Prone Skin: By relying entirely on enzymatic rather than acid- or abrasive-based exfoliation, this mask avoids the pH disruption and friction that can trigger flare-ups in sensitive and rosacea-prone skin. Theobroma Cacao Seed Powder contributes polyphenolic compounds that may help reduce the appearance of redness, making this mask appropriate for skin types that cannot tolerate conventional exfoliants.
  • Antioxidant Protection: Theobroma Cacao Seed Powder and Ascorbic Acid together deliver antioxidant activity at the skin surface during the treatment period, helping to neutralize oxidative stress from environmental sources and supporting the appearance of healthy, even-toned skin.
  • Visible Keratin Buildup Reduction: Trypsin specifically targets keratin proteins that accumulate within follicular openings and on the stratum corneum surface, helping visibly reduce congestion and rough texture associated with keratin buildup — supporting clearer-looking skin in acne-prone clients.
  • Pre-Treatment Skin Preparation: The enzymatic exfoliation action removes surface protein debris and loosens the outer cell layer, allowing active ingredients applied in subsequent treatment steps to reach the skin surface more effectively.

Active ingredients

Bromelain - known as Pineapple Enzyme: A proteolytic enzyme derived from pineapple that selectively dissolves cysteine protease proteins on the skin surface, gently loosening and removing dead keratinized cells without physical abrasion. Bromelain also exhibits documented anti-inflammatory properties, making it suitable for reactive and sensitive skin types.

Papain - known as Papaya Enzyme: A cysteine protease enzyme derived from papaya that targets and dissolves sulphydroxyl protein groups within the outer stratum corneum, providing enzymatic exfoliation that softens skin texture and supports surface cell turnover without the irritation associated with mechanical or acid-based exfoliation.

Trypsin: A serine protease enzyme that specifically targets and hydrolyzes keratin proteins at the skin surface, contributing a third and mechanistically distinct pathway of enzymatic exfoliation. Its keratin-dissolving action helps reduce buildup within follicular openings and supports smoother surface texture.

Theobroma Cacao Seed Powder - known as Cocoa Powder: Derived from cacao beans, this powder delivers a concentrated source of naturally occurring polyphenolic antioxidants, including flavanols. It provides antioxidant protection against environmental oxidative stress at the skin surface and contributes mild vasoconstrictive properties that may help reduce the appearance of redness — particularly relevant for rosacea-prone and sensitized skin.

Ascorbic Acid - known as Vitamin C: A water-soluble antioxidant present in the formulation that helps neutralize free radical activity at the skin surface during the masking period. In this powder-format context, Ascorbic Acid also serves a dual role as a formula stabilizer, helping to preserve enzyme activity by maintaining a low-pH, reducing environment that protects protease integrity prior to activation with water.

Ingredients

Carrageenan, Maltodextrin, Zea Mays Starch, Bromelain, Theobroma Cacao Seed Powder, C12-18 Acid Triglyceride, Lactose, Disodium Phosphate, Trypsin, Papain, Aroma/Flavor, Calcium Carbonate, Citric Acid, Ascorbic Acid

How to use

  1. Mix the required amount of Cocoa Enzyme Mask powder with water or an appropriate activating liquid according to the service protocol, blending to a smooth, uniform paste consistency.
  2. Cleanse and prepare the client's skin prior to application, removing all makeup, sunscreen, and surface debris.
  3. Perform a skin analysis to confirm the client is an appropriate candidate; note any sensitivity, active rosacea, or enzyme allergy before proceeding.
  4. Using a mask brush or fingertips, apply an even layer of the prepared mask to the client's face, avoiding the eye and lip areas.
  5. Allow the mask to process on the skin for the appropriate dwell time as directed by the treatment protocol, typically 10–15 minutes. Monitor the client for any signs of sensitivity during processing.
  6. Remove the mask thoroughly with warm, damp sponges or cloths, working in gentle upward strokes until all residue is cleared.
  7. Follow with a calming toner or serum appropriate to the client's skin type and the service plan.

Service integration and client selection

This mask is well suited as the exfoliation step within a corrective facial protocol before the application of treatment serums or ampoules — the enzyme action creates a clean, receptive surface that improves subsequent product absorption. For acneic clients, the keratin-dissolving action of Trypsin makes this a useful pre-extractions step; loosening follicular buildup before manual extractions reduces trauma and improves ease of clearance.

For rosacea or sensitized clients, limit initial processing time to 5–8 minutes and increase incrementally across subsequent sessions once client tolerance is established. Avoid use during active flare-ups or on visibly broken capillaries that are compromised. The absence of AHAs, BHAs, and physical abrasives makes this one of the few exfoliating options appropriate for these clients, which is a strong retail and rebooking conversation: position it as their safe monthly exfoliation alternative.
