Evening primrose oil

🌿 A leave-on facial cream from CIRCADIA built specifically for rosacea-prone, reactive, and sensitive skin — where calming the appearance of redness and reinforcing a compromised barrier are the same job.

The formula centers on Evening Primrose Oil, which is rich in gamma-linolenic acid — a fatty acid naturally depleted in sensitive skin types — to support lipid barrier replenishment and visibly reduce the look of dryness and flushing over consistent use. What makes it stand apart in the calming-cream category is its inclusion of Cinnamomum Cassia and Thyme essential oils, which target Demodex folliculorum, a microbial trigger strongly associated with rosacea flares, rather than simply addressing surface redness.

For estheticians, this slots cleanly into a rosacea-focused facial protocol as a finishing step — particularly following gentle enzyme or mild lactic treatments. Note that the formula contains multiple essential oils with EU-declarable allergens; a patch test and fragrance sensitivity screening are standard protocol before first full-face application.

A fit for estheticians whose rosacea clients need more than surface-level calming.

Benefits

  • Visibly Reduces Redness and Skin Reactivity: The formula's combination of Evening Primrose Oil and essential oil actives works together to visibly calm the appearance of redness, flushing, and irritation in rosacea-prone and sensitive skin types.
  • Barrier Reinforcement and Moisture Retention: Evening Primrose Oil's high gamma-linolenic acid content helps replenish the lipid barrier in sensitive skin, supporting improved moisture retention and a reduction in transepidermal water loss over time with consistent leave-on application.
  • Demodex Mite Management: Cinnamomum Cassia Leaf Oil (cinnamon bark oil) acts as a natural repellent for Demodex folliculorum, the mite associated with rosacea flare-ups, helping to address a key contributing trigger at the source.
  • Antimicrobial Surface Support: Thyme essential oil (Thymus Vulgaris Flower/Leaf Oil) provides broad antimicrobial coverage on the skin surface, helping to reduce microbial triggers that can contribute to inflammatory rosacea episodes.
  • Calming Effect on Sensitive and Reactive Skin: Formulated specifically for rosacea-prone, red, and easily irritated skin types, the cream delivers a calming sensory experience on application while the botanical actives work to reduce the appearance of ongoing reactivity.

Active ingredients

Oenothera Biennis Oil - known as Evening Primrose Oil: A botanical seed oil exceptionally rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid that is naturally reduced in sensitive and reactive skin types. GLA helps replenish the skin's lipid barrier, supporting moisture retention and contributing to a calmer, less reactive surface appearance. On a leave-on cream, the extended skin contact allows the oil's fatty acid profile to integrate into the surface barrier layers, visibly reducing dryness and redness associated with a compromised barrier.

Cinnamomum Cassia Leaf Oil - known as Cinnamon Bark Oil: A steam-distilled essential oil derived from Cinnamomum cassia bark, used in this formula for its documented repellent activity against Demodex folliculorum — the microscopic mite that lives on facial skin and is considered a contributing trigger for rosacea flare-ups. By helping to reduce Demodex populations, this ingredient targets a root-level trigger of redness and irritation rather than simply masking surface symptoms. It also contributes broad antimicrobial support to the formula.

Thymus Vulgaris (Thyme) Flower/Leaf Oil - known as Thyme Essential Oil: A botanical essential oil with well-established antimicrobial properties, primarily attributed to its thymol and carvacrol content. In a rosacea-focused formula, thyme oil complements the cinnamon oil's anti-demodex activity by providing broader antimicrobial coverage against surface bacteria that can contribute to inflammatory flares. Its position in the formula suggests a functional concentration consistent with antimicrobial effect delivery on leave-on application.

Ingredients

Aqua/Water, Hydroxyethylpiperazine Ethane Sulfonic Acid, Oenothera Biennis Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf Oil, Gaultheria Procumbens (Wintergreen) Leaf Oil, Cinnamomum Cassia Leaf Oil, Thymus Vulgaris (Thyme) Flower/Leaf Oil, Phenethyl Propionate, Carbomer, Caprylyl Glycol, Hexylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Eugenol, Benzyl Benzoate, Linalool, Limonene, Cinnamal

How to use

  1. After cleansing the client's face, dispense 1–2 pumps of cream onto fingertips.
  2. Lightly apply to affected areas of the face using gentle, low-friction strokes to avoid further stimulating reactive skin.
  3. Avoid the eye area during application.
  4. For initial introduction, use 2–3 times per week and increase frequency as the skin's tolerance improves.
  5. Apply morning and evening as part of the complete skincare protocol.

Working with rosacea-prone and reactive skin

Because this formula contains multiple essential oils — including cinnamon, thyme, rosemary, and wintergreen — a patch test is strongly recommended before first full-face application on sensitive clients, particularly those with known fragrance reactivity. Apply a small amount to the inner forearm or behind the ear 24–48 hours before the first facial service. Note that the EU-declarable fragrance allergens Eugenol, Cinnamal, Linalool, Limonene, and Benzyl Benzoate appear in the INCI list; this is worth disclosing during the client consultation and documenting in the client intake record. For in-clinic use, this cream works well as the final step in a calming facial protocol following a gentle enzyme or mild lactic acid treatment on rosacea skin — not after aggressive exfoliation or laser.
